Unveiling Our Locale: A Tapestry of History and Landscape
The Mokau River was once one of the busiest rivers in the country. Its waters were plied by hundreds of vessels carrying timber, coal and cream from the dairy farms. Mokau river boat cruises still follow the journey of the cream boats (circa 1913), a length of 14 kilometres.
The middle to upper reaches of the Mokau river have a series of rapids that attract kayakers.
Both the Awakino and Mokau Rivers are significant Trout and Whitebait fisheries. The Awakino beach is a stone’s throw from the camping ground and boast 2.8kms of Taranaki’s famous iron sand, where you can explore natural coastal caves, swim and surf. Other activities include hiking, fishing, walking tracks, water skiing, Three Sisters rocks and the famous Mokau stock tunnel.
